Question: Is a divorced person excommunicated from the Church?
Answer: Absolutely not. A divorced person who remains single remains in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, §1649)
Question: Is a divorced and remarried (civilly) Catholic person excommunicated from the Church?
Answer: If a divorced person remarries contrary to the teachings of the Church, he/she is still invited to participate in the public prayer of the Church, worship with the community at Mass and participate in other spiritual and social functions in the Church. Such a person, however, CANNOT receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist until his/her marital status is clarified in the Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, §1650, §1651)

The safety of our children is the responsibility of every Christian. Anyone aware of the abuse of a person under the age of eighteen is required by law to report this to the proper state authorities or the KY Child Abuse Hotline toll free 1-877-KYSAFE1; (1-877-597-2331). To report to the diocese abuse by church personnel (paid/volunteer) either past or present, call Louanne Payne, Pastoral Assistance Coordinator at this confidential phone line; (270) 852-8380 or Nuria Elizondo, Pastoral Assistance Coordinator (Spanish) at (270) 880-8360.
No one should have to live with abuse, and the Diocese of Owensboro, in keeping with the laws of Kentucky and of the Church, encourages any victim of sexual abuse to make the abuse known by contacting local law enforcement (911), the Child Protection Hotline 1-877-KYSAFE (1-877-597-2331 toll free) or contact your local Commonwealth Attorney. If the abuse involves Church personnel, either paid or volunteer, please also contact the Diocese's Pastoral Assistance Coordinator at the confidential phone line: (270) 852-8380, to make a report and begin the healing process. The diocese's commitment to combat sexual abuse concerns can be noted in its revised sexual abuse policy, effective July 1st, 2014, which can be found in the Parish Office as well as on the diocesan website, www.rcdok.org/safe
