Question: Is a divorced person excommunicated from the Church?
Answer: Absolutely not. A divorced person who remains single remains in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, §1649)
Question: Is a divorced and remarried (civilly) Catholic person excommunicated from the Church?
Answer: If a divorced person remarries contrary to the teachings of the Church, he/she is still invited to participate in the public prayer of the Church, worship with the community at Mass and participate in other spiritual and social functions in the Church. Such a person, however, CANNOT receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist until his/her marital status is clarified in the Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, §1650, §1651)
